Umbrella Base – Perfect for Outdoor Shade Umbrella

Umbrella base might be something you’d leave behind if going to the shore with your beach umbrella. After all, you’d probably already be carrying a cooler, beach chairs, kid toys, sunscreen, beach towels, and more. At home in the backyard, however, an outdoor patio umbrella might benefit greatly from having an umbrella stand for the shade umbrella.

To avoid the sun’s rays as the summer months approach, one may need a patio umbrella, but without an umbrella base for it, it might just fly away.

A typical umbrella base weighs some pounds, and for good reason. You want it to do it’s job.

So, how does one choose the right umbrella base? In order to choose the right umbrella base there are some crucial measurements to take before you go shopping for it online.

It is important to measure the diameter of the shade and, if the umbrella is to go through a hole in the table, it is important to measure that space. It is also necessary to know the width of the umbrella’s pole. The average umbrella pole is 1.5 inches in diameter. However, sizes range from 1/8 of an inch to 3 inches in diameter.

One of the most popular sizes for an outdoor umbrella shade is 6 feet.

Typically, a six foot patio umbrella that is meant for a patio table should be matched with a 30 pound or so base.

Other standard umbrella shade sizes for a patio table are 7.5 foot, 9 foot, and 11 foot. Most of the time, a 7.5 foot shade can also be supported on a 30 pound umbrella base.

For a larger shade, usually between 8 feet and 11 feet, an umbrella base might need to be more hefty.

Another consideration when buying an umbrella base for your patio umbrella is whether it will support a free-standing umbrella shade or will go through a hole in a patio table. Free standing umbrella bases tend to be heavier, as a 7.5 foot free standing umbrella shade requires a larger/heavier umbrella base.

The material used for the base also makes a difference in the look and functionality of the umbrella base. Usually a base can be made of aluminum, wood, or maybe something cementitious. If it is made of wood, it could use a pulley system to tilt the umbrella. Or it might have a crank lift or push button tilt.

Aluminum and wood, however, are not the only materials used for an umbrella base for the backyard sun umbrella. Other materials include steel, cast iron, heavy-duty plastic, fiberglass, concrete, granite, resin, or wicker. Historically cast iron was a traditional material for an outdoor umbrella base. Other materials have their own advantages. For instance, granite is heavy which makes it very sturdy and less susceptible to weather hazards.

Whatever material your choose, having an umbrella base in the backyard will help preserve the stability and longevity of your sun umbrella. It won’t be tipping over or falling over each time the breeze hits the umbrella.
