Electric Can Opener – Which One is Your Choice?
Do you need a new electric can opener? Whether you’ve just moved into a new place and that rusty manual hand powered opener won’t do, or you’re trying to match a kitchen color scheme and that 1970′s avocado colored opener just doesn’t quite have the look of today, or the old one has announced it’s ready for the metal recyclers, it’s time to pick up a new one.
If it’s time to buy that counter-top appliance opener, you may not have realized all the styles and options that are now available to you. Let’s start with the basic two types and expand from there. There are openers which stand on the counter top and units which mount, more or less, inconspicuously under a cabinet.
Under the cabinet mounted models are great if you want to minimize the visual impact, but before you purchase, make sure where the power cord will be plugged in and its path to the opener. Is there a way to secure it to the cabinet and or the wall? Make a note to avoid placement where it may interfere with under cabinet lighting. It shouldn’t be placed where spills aren’t OK, over a heat source, or where it may be bumped by a heavy pot. I’ve also been warned not to put it under a cabinet containing fragile items like glassware or fine china. Some units could possibly vibrate the cabinet, which wouldn’t necessarily do anything to the dishes, but just a heads up that a little rearranging of dishes might be good.
The counter top standing models avoid many of these placement considerations, but of course they do take up a little space. The nice thing I like about having it on the counter is that it is easy to pick up and clean around, so that you can keep things tidy.
Regarding the interior design choices, your opener is available in black, white, brushed and polished chrome, to match or contrast with your appliances (your choice!). They also come in a rainbow of other colors and finishes, just for the fun of it. So you could select something matching, or something that would be a dash of an accent with some visual interest.
These openers also have some mechanical considerations. Some have a more powerful motor. Some are in the on position only when you are pushing a lever of button, while others lock the can in place and open it in a hands free operation.
Another option, often paired with openers, is an electric knife sharpener. You’ll pay a bit more than a basic unit, but it’s a convenient solution to having chronically dull knives.
Whichever style you choose, it sure beats cranking the hand opener. Tired and stiff hands will appreciate having a kitchen electric can opener.
