Romantic Chandelier Light for the Home

Chandelier light is incredible.  Somewhere, in all those fairy tales and romances, there is something about the light of a chandelier that makes all girls, whether little or fully grown, a bit giggly and misty.

There is just something about a chandelier that lights up a room unlike anything else. It provides a type of elegance and pleasure that other lighting fixtures for the home cannot approach. Whether a chandelier that resembles something from Beauty and the Beast or something contemporary and modern, a chandelier provides a pleasant and enjoyable ambiance that standard lighting fixtures lack. This article will review some of the types of chandeliers available and various types of bulbs that change the tenor of the lighting a chandelier can provide.

There are several types of chandeliers – from the romantic crystal and brass fixtures one normally envisions when thinking of chandeliers to more modern and contemporary fixtures. Eben glass chandeliers! Traditional chandeliers are usually brass or iron fixtures with hanging crystal pieces. These can be vintage or modern replicas, ranging in price from below $100 to several hundred, and even thousands, of dollars. Accent pieces, like lead crystal as opposed to glass can bring up the price considerably, like the Swarovski Spectra Crystal Chandelier, which sells on average for about $1300.

More rustic or country-style chandeliers can provide their own ambiance and charm. Unlike traditional chandeliers, these are often made of iron or bronze and chain, as opposed to brass and frosted or colored glass. The light from these chandeliers can be subtler and slightly more subdued.  Lodge or western are common key terms when it comes to these country-style chandeliers. One has only to look at Aspen-style lighting in order to picture the broad variety in this area. Disney’s Grand California Adventure hotel provides, likewise, many fine examples of this genre. They have, clearly, their own elegance.

Contemporary or modern chandeliers often too make use of frosted and colored glass. However, this is where the comparisons can easily end. Some contemporary chandeliers are one-of-a-kind pieces, often resembling pieces of art, like the Lite Source Cristallo Contemporary Chandelier which sports pieces of glass, like a traditional chandelier, but all fashioned in the shape of a ball hanging below a chrome metal canopy. While some contemporary chandeliers do in some respects resemble traditional chandeliers, many make use of metal, glass, and color in unique ways that give them their own, unique appearance and glow.

Interestingly, the more we become modernized, the more we try to hold on to the past. Chandelier light bulbs are no exception. Options used to be limited to clear or frosted, but now, the more nostalgic shopper can select bulbs that mimic real flame, selecting flicker flame light bulbs. While these do tend to be a bit more pricey, they are becoming increasingly more available. If you are lucky they might even be carried by your local hardware stores for around $5.50. One of my personal favorite options are colored light bulbs. These used to come as a tinged incandescent bulb, but even now there are more varieties with a clear favorite being the multi-colored bulbs reminiscent of Tiffany lights that are increasingly coming down in price and readily available at many department stores. These are a favorite as they give off a warmth unlike traditional bulbs and are quite attractive.

There are many options when it comes to chandeliers, whether traditional or contemporary. From the material used to the light bulbs selected, options are easily matched with the decor of one’s home. Few light fixtures provide the ambiance of a chandelier and investing in a good one will certainly add to the general elegance of one’s home.
