Posture Support – What a Relief

Poor posture can cause back pain, headache, neck pain, blood pressure changes, mood changes, and breathing problems as well as being very unattractive.
Physicians and physical therapists tell us that poor posture can be a downward spiraling cascade. Poor posture can result in disc damage, and will certainly exasperate an arthritic condition or other condition such as spondylolysthesis. Standing wrong, lifting wrong, bending wrong, squatting wrong and even lying in a position that compromises your spine can lead to strain or sprain of ligaments, tendons, or muscles.

One should see a physician to rule out the possibility of a serious condition such as a cyst or tumor before attempting home remedies. Once these are ruled out, your doctor may prescribe physical therapy and use of some sort of posture support product. The type of support corrector you need depends on your job and your other normal daily activities.
Many jobs may require a health aid posture support braces. If you lift heavy objects or just lift light objects in a repetitive manner, if you bend or squat in the performance of your job, or if you do prolonged standing, you may need back support.
OSHA has stated that PPE (Personal protective Equipment) such as back supports may not be used as the only means of employee protection, unless there are no other controls available, but they are effective for some job hazards. They also found that belt wearing increased diastolic blood pressure during every task due to the wearer believing that it increased the ability to lift beyond a healthy level. Another control to consider using with posture support (back belts) is job rotation which can be useful if the rotated jobs involve the use of different muscle-tendon groups or if the workers are given a therapeutic period of rest
You doctor may conclude that you need a posture support or posture back brace for activities outside of work to slow degenerative changes produced by poor posture, and there are a variety of materials, sizes, and specialty options to choose from.
There are shirts with built in support for the spine that cue the body to relax tight muscles while strengthening opposing muscles, and some have a vibrating reminder in the pocket to tell you when your posture is unaligned.
There are supports for the upper, middle or lower back, some with heat or vibration. Some wrap around the shoulder blades pulling your shoulders into proper alignment. For ladies this mechanism can be built into a posture support bra or a full torso support including a crotch.
Look for flexibility and ventilation in support materials Latex is available but it does not breathe. Choose a support made from Lycra, spandex, or one of the newer materials. Look for straps to make the item more adjustable.
Look for a support that is easy to put on and take off. If you will you be wearing it under other clothing, bulk can be a factor. These decisions fall under the purview of the physicians, physical therapists, and occupational therapists who may be treating you.
Posture support is worth buying when indicated, worth getting a quality item. You health is important.
