Portable Heat Pad – Wonderfully Convenient!

A portable heat pad has the amazing ability to relax tight muscles and increase relaxation. Just the act of warming alone seems to reduce stress, and enhance the subjective experience of well-being. For this, the world is grateful for the opportunity to own a heating pad.

Gone are the days of searching for the perfect spot for plugging in a heating or heat pad, to comfortably benefit from its soothing warmth. Nowadays, modern science and technology have partnered to update something as useful, yet simple, as the humble heating pad, with the arrival of a very convenient, portable one! Some can even be heated in the microwave.

Long used for relief from sprains, muscle and joint soreness, arthritis, cramps, backaches, and an array of sports injuries, there are endless medical uses for thermal heating pads. While cold packs reduce inflammation by shrinking blood vessels, heat works on the opposite principle and is often advised once inflammation, or swelling, has been controlled. The effectiveness of heat, then, is in dilating the blood vessels, thereby increasing the blood flow to the distressed area. Heat enhances and speeds the recovery and healing of injured areas, when inflammation is not the issue. With a portable heat pad, conveniently free of wires or outlets, discomfort can be eased even while driving, attending an event, or of course, anywhere at home.

Besides medical and health use, reusable heating pads are great for outdoor activities in cold weather, providing the opportunity for engaging in sports or hobbies for a longer period of time. The cold won’t be so threatening, whether fishing, hiking, skiing, hunting, or cheering at football games, with a portable source of heat handily placed against the body. Heat pads can easily be hand or foot warmers, be positioned at the shoulder or lower back, or save the day as bottle or plate warmers. Additionally, many are light-weight and easily stored in a vehicle or carry bag.

What makes portable heat pads effective? Some are made of mostly pure aluminum, with a polypropylene insert, and a layer of fabric on the outside, and work on the principle that your own body heat is reflected back to the needed site. The soothing heat, thus provided, is moist and even, your own body acting as “command central.” They are readily used on any body surface as often, and for as long, as needed.

Other pads generate heat through crystallization of a salt solution they contain. They always heat to the same safe, comfortable preset temperature, usually around 130 degrees F. They can be used hundreds of times, maintaining warmth lasting from 15 minutes until 6 hours, depending on pad size, insulation, and starting temperature. They can last indefinitely if not punctured.

Overall, it is apparent that the portable heat pad, an update for a very trusted means of providing soothing warmth, is a welcome change for lessening the aches and pains of modern living. The electric heating pad remains a wonderful household staple, but when more mobility is required, a portable heat pad could be just the right thing.
