Not all cooking pots are interchangeable. Some have special uses. Just one or two big pots may not be quite enough for the way you cook.

If you get something that’s brand new and top of the line, you can focus on the features that are important to you today.

So where do you start looking?

Like most things for the kitchen, especially cookware, you’ll want to consider, convenience, performance (how it actually cooks), other uses, of course looks and the value for what you’ll be spending.

One first thought may be, I’ll get something really big, commercial kitchen size. A person could use that for cooking big batches of stuff. But on the practical side, how often would that really be used? A five gallon pot filled three quarters full will weigh over thirty five pounds. Too big! Not only that but a giant commercial sized pasta or stock pot may not have that highly attractive, detailed level of finish you’re looking for. Some cookware exteriors like anodized finishes are designed more for function. Others come with a gleaming high gloss look. The choice is mostly a matter of personal taste.

Medium to large sized (ten to twelve quart or so) multiple use pots for home use are offered by several manufactures in bundled sets. These may include the pot, a perforated pasta insert for one step cooking and draining, a tempered glass and stainless lid and sometimes a smaller additional pot and lid. These packages are an incredible value.

Other versions of noodle cooking equipment have the holes for straining off water actually built in to the lid.

When considering that performance variable, look for a solid or sandwiched aluminum bottom. The ad may call this a core of encapsulated aluminum (this means you’ll find it layered inside the stainless steel).

Generally the thicker it is the better it will conduct heat. A nonstick interior surface, although not mandatory in a large pot like this, certainly makes cleanup easier.

Handles on a large cooking pot must be bombproof. Look for ones that are double riveted for the strongest of the various alternatives.

There are a number of things to think about when selecting this type of kitchen cooking container. Prioritize them in your mind as you look for your purchase. One particular factor may make all other features secondary, then again, it may end up being lots of fun trying to balance them all out as you buy your wonderful new pasta pot.

The room your kids are going to sleep in needs some consideration. You can’t just slap in a bunk bed and call it a day. There are several different aspects of furnishing these rooms from safety guidelines to how you position the chairs and more. It matters which color you use and you should be aware of which twin mattress works with what bed.

The children’s bedroom is just as important to equip with pieces of furniture as it is to design your living room. The function is a bit different and much more attention needs to be paid to the safety features. Once you’ve equipped the room with wardrobes, and only the kids beds are missing, you can fall into a dilemma what type is ideal.

There is no ideal solution, but generally speaking the bigger it is, the more time you have before having to replace it. If the kids won’t grow too much anymore, for example if they’re 12 or more, they’re unlikely to stretch another 20 inches in 5 years. This is the time to get them a twin mattress. The standard size is about 40 inches by 75 inches, but you better measure the bed first.

Kids love to sleep on the top of a bunk bed for no apparent reason. While it’s great fun for them, it can be a frustrating factor for you. Don’t let them sleep on the top if they’re under six, and even after that a safety grid is mandatory. Use night lights so that they could see the steps of the ladder and don’t fall off. There are thirty-thousand accidents every year caused by bunk beds, which could be avoided. Don’t let them play in the bed, make so that it’s strictly for sleeping.

Wall beds for kids rooms make sense according to some people, because when they are folded up to the wall there is more room to play during the daytime. Other people might consider this type of bed to be a safety hazard in itself.

After the safety is properly taken care of you can think about the design and choose the colors. Unless you want to get into an argument, it’s nice to let the children participate in the selection of accessories and colors. You’ll see that the cliche blue and pink is not always what they want.

When kids grow older it’s necessary to change their cribs bed and bedding into something bigger and more comfortable.

It’s a big moment for them when they can finally sleep in a bed like mom and dad, and that’s why it’s important to choose wisely. It can’t be too big nor too small; kids in this age grow quickly, but you don’t want them to sleep in a too big bed. There is a solution for all the problems fortunately.

Beds come in several sizes, but to accommodate one child you don’t need to go overboard with king size mattresses. The most often used form factor is the double or the single mattress. The single is usually roughly 39 inches by 75 inches, while a double quite a big bigger. The thickness varies greatly by the type, the technology used and even the manufacturer. Figure in the neighborhood of 8 inches thick for the mattress. There is no need to buy the thickest, most comfortable mattress out there for one good reason.

Single or twin mattresses come in lots of types these days. They include varieties like firm, euro-topping, the pillowtopper, and plushy. Fancy names can cost more, so stick with basic categories if you want no frills.

The measurement of the mattress frame should match the mattress. For a basic twin single of 75″ x 39″  inches, look for frames in the realm of 74″ x 38″  measurements.

If you find your need is more for guest sleeping, have you considered a rollaway bed to save space? Rollaway beds typically have mattresses measuring 31″ x 75″ , and they’re 4 or so inches thick, with lightweight metal frames in the nature of 31″ x 75″  inches when the bed is opened out flat. When not in use a roll away folds easily up for storage.

You’re going to fit it with a waterproof mattress pad during the first few months anyway. Children, who are not fully potty trained and are taken out of the crib often have accidents at night. It’s normal for kids to have accidents and that’s why you should be prepared for it. Mattress pads are thick linen or thin mattresses that give additional support and comfort, thus the lack of need for thick bed base in the first place.

Waterproof mattress pads are all that, and some more as they don’t let fluids, perspiration or else, pass through and into the mattress. There are several brands that you can choose from, and since there are no big differences between them you can comfortably go with any of them that guarantee spill-free nights. Sealy offers a reasonably priced solution solution for normal size beds, which is a really low price for complete comfort and the peace of mind.

Bedding and mattresses are an important part of the bedroom. For a child this size of single mattress makes sense.

If you live in the UK, you’re perfectly aware of who Jamie Oliver is (from TV), and why it is a good idea to buy stuff he uses. It’s safe to assume that a person who cooks as good as he does knows what tools, appliances and utensils to use in a kitchen environment. If you’re still hesitant about what he makes (or gives his name for), this article will walk you through different techniques used to make the sets.

If you’ve done your culinary homework, you know that Jamie Oliver cookware comes in four so-called flavors. He and Tefal (T-fal) put their heads together, and came up with a hard anodized aluminum, a cast aluminum, a hard enamel and a stainless steel cookware set. All four sets come for under the price of similar cookware.

Stainless steel is something we all know. It’s durable, hard to break and easy enough to clean. Thanks to the material used, it won’t chip and it takes quite a blow to bend one. If you have the tendency of dropping your pans, you better choose something else. Or stop dropping the pans, of course.

Hard anodized cookware are aluminum treated with a special acid bath and some direct current. It doesn’t sound like a lovely splash, but aluminum seems to grow some hard surface in it, which is good for your cooking needs. It’s claimed to be two times as hard as stainless steel is, which is quite a claim to live up to.

Cast aluminum is probably the weakest link in this list, but that doesn’t mean these are not something you’d make a really good use of. The price is the same as that of the hard anodized set, which fact makes those better pick.

Hard enamel is durable, you do have to hit something hard and edgy to chip the enamel, but it’s indeed possible. You get some easy cleaning and low-weight equipment for your money; not too shabby.

All four sets are worth going for according to some people, but just like with anything else the question pops up, ‘Which set is the best?’ . If one was to decide between the four, a sane price choice would most probably be the hard anodized aluminum sauce pan set. Of course, when it comes to affordable cookware, we may go beyond our budgets for really good stuff like a copper bottomed set.

Here’s a representative indication of what you might get from this brand. The T-Fal set of cookware a la Jamie Oliver in stainless offers a one quart saucepan, a saute pan measuring ten inches, another deeper pan for saute with a three and a half quart capacity, another saucepan somewhat smaller (almost two and a half quart size), and a dutch oven. Some of the lids do double duty on more than one pan.

Things people like about some of the professional style J.O. cookware sets include the heaviness and substantial feel. The glass lid with a little vent for steam is a cute feature.The handles are another nice design feature.

Depending on which component material you select, you might find that the interior surface can stain. At least there was one person complained about this. Like everything else, some people love the stuff, and others are less thrilled.

Just the dutch oven alone could serve as a fry pan, and a sauce pan, if you only want one piece initially. You could always add the full set of pots and pans later. It’s nice that you can find everything from a stew pot to an oval-shaped cocotte in the Jamie Oliver cookware brand.

If you’ve ever made donuts at home, you’ll know that mixing the dough is not as easy as some cookbooks would like to make it out. I know, I’ve made pizza and donut dough by hand, because there was no mixer available in the new apartment, and my hands got sore the day after. It’s highly suggested that you take a good hard look around and buy a cheap one at least for occasional use so that you don’t have to fight with the bowl and a wood spoon every time you fancy homemade foods.

A hand mixer is a really simple invention. It’s nothing more than a cord, a motor and two beater inserts that do the vast majority of the job. The mixer blade inserts are what define the purpose of a machine. In most basic packs you can find good dishwasher-safe metal whiskers. It takes out the hard work of cooking at home. Don’t think that a Cuisinart hand mixer will change your life completely, but you might as well find it useful.

A good hand mixing apparatus should be capable of taking on any job, and getting that task done. It should purr confidently, not moan like it’s being over-worked.A quality mixer can stand up to even the heavy demand of a thick batter with chunky ingredients which need blending.

There are not a lot of features to compare, but here are a couple. First, there’s the amount of power in the motor. Next, is it a 3-speed, 5-speed variable spped, or what (that is, does it have a speed slider?)? A final nice feature to look for, is whether the mixer comes with a swivel power cord that can adapt depending on whether you are left or right handed.

These appliances can be used to puree fruits, grind up vegetables, mix onions, whisk the white of eggs, make toppings and many more things. There are the models intended for home use, and the heavy duty pieces, which you need when making food for more than five people.

The kitchen rule of thumb when deciding between a big stand mixer and a hand mixer is the number of people you cook for. If you feed a family of five or more, or welcome guests often, I’d strongly suggest that you try to go for the bigger, bulkier type. It not only will make the task seem less legendary, but you’ll find that the durability justifies the extra cash spent over a simple hand mixer of any brand.

Keep in mind, too, that a hand mixer is different than the kitchen Cuisinart immersion blender. Those are the hand held stick variety (hand blender), best suited for combining things more on the liquid end of the spectrum.

For a first purchase in this family of counter top appliances, Cuisinart hand mixers may be the way to go.

It’s always a great dilemma what to do with guests who stay for the night, apart from welcoming them, of course. A folding bed is necessary, or at least an inflatable mattress and an extra chair is desired in the kitchen, should you sit down all at once to have a nice dinner.  The solutions are at hand, but probably not where you’d look at first.

When buying a dinner table, it’s suggested that you always buy more chairs than there are people in the family. Most tables come with an even number of them; 4, 6 or 8 are the norm, but by request the retailer often sells more if you prefer it that way. If that’s not an option, well, you have to fix it in a way or another. Perhaps some folding chairs? A folding stool or more is probably the cheapest yet most comfortable way of getting around to sit down to the table all at once.

The advantage of folding stools is that they can fold flat and be stored quite easily when not in use.

Portable folding stools and chairs are available everywhere, from online retailers to local supermarkets. You can even buy one in the hunting or fishing equipment store. The color doesn’t matter the least, you’ll take it out every now and then anyway, but the robustness is of first priority. If a n average adult is to sit down on it, it needs to hold up to at least 200 lbs or more. You may want to use it to reach something on the top shelf, so stability needs to be taken care of as well.

The best way of fixing it is to buy 2-3 different sizes and makes of them and you’ll have several to choose from when another person needs to sit down, or you want to have something to stand on. Some round ones come in a diameter of 18 inches, while others may be a 24 inch square seat. They cost less than $100 each, so it’s not a big investment to purchase more at a time. Once it’s fixed, you only have to get a nice inflatable mattress, a toaster and a juicer machine, and your guests can feel like they’re home. A coffee machine is given, so they can drink whatever they please to at the morning, and you haven’t spent too much on making your house guest friendly, either.

The basic types include:

- A 2-step folding step stool. This is great when you need to get up higher in the home pantry. The classic ones are metal with rubber treads. Rubbermaid also makes a plastic one.

- Collapsible stools can be for seating or for making you taller. These are great for kids in the bathroom, if they happen to be short and can’t reach into the sink yet.

- Cushioned folding stools are perfect for living room or family room gatherings.

-  Folding bar stools are perfect if you might be seating extra guest at the counter for the holiday meal.

- Folding counter stools work out great if your counter peninsula is lower than bar chair height.

- Wood folding stools are nice if you prefer a more “furniture” look.

- Folding camping stools can serve double utility, both as seating on your camping trip, and when you need extra chairs at home.

- Sport outdoor stools are the folding seating that you see golf fans taking around the fairway, or at a parade. They are light enough to use as a walking stick, and also provide a small seating area for when your legs get tired.

Whichever kind of seating you select, it will ease your mind to know you have this when company visits. You will know ahead of time that there will be plenty of places to sit thanks to your home‘s folding stools.

Do you often find yourself in the kitchen making soup or side dishes that need minced or chopped vegetables? It doesn’t have to be a chore. This article might give you the basic idea about what to look for in a food processor to make your life a bit easier. About $100+ worth of kitchen appliances easier, to be exact.

If you have kids, you need to have a food processor, period. It’s good to make pureed fruits. Kids don’t like fruit for some reason, but they happily eat it once it’s chopped and mixed. I don’t think there is an explanation to this phenomenon, but I suggest that you try it. You can be artistic and try different combinations of fruit, or add cinnamon to pureed apple. If there are two fruits that can be chopped up, they can be mixed, thus the number of options are endless.

You can also use small appliances to make ice cream or smoothies. There are smoothie makers that do the latter better, but they don’t offer the kind of versatility.

Why should you buy a Braun food processor in particular? They’re made to last. You don’t have look too hard to find people who have had Braun products for ten or twenty years without an issue. Don’t forget to check with the retailer though, Braun being a European brand often makes models with 220V non-US compatible plugs.

A standing unit for your kitchen cooking needs with a fixed bowl costs some bucks, but what you get for that is speed and pulse control of your mixing. Take a look at the  Braun Multiquick and Braun CombiMax.

If you don’t have to cook for more than a few people, you may be able to use a less expensive hand blender for some tasks. They can be equipped with a blender insert.

Since the only reason for buying a smaller unit for your home kitchen instead of a full size food processor is the price, I’d suggest you keep it simple and buy something that will best meet all of your needs in the long run. Not everybody needs a food processor that is heavy duty, but they are quite a treasure if you get one. Keep both eyes open, too, and look around different brands as well, Bosch and Phillips makes quite good appliances, too, just like the Braun food processor is. Also, even though you may never have heard of the name brand, discount retailers like Target and Walmart online might surprise you with the breath of their available products.

The propaganda against giving sweaters as a gift during Christmas has been strong enough to virtually exterminate the interest for these products. They’re not the evil, though, most men love to wear something warm and cozy, at least when they’re at home.

What is it that makes a sweater more wearable these days? Well, for starters one needs to abandon the idea that you have to be at least thirty years old to wear this type of garment. Where did that crazy idea come from, anyway? LOL! After you are over the thought that sweaters must be dowdy, just choose one that looks warm and appealing.

Men’s sweaters come from a long tradition nourished by craft workers and women who know how to deal with the yarn.  A simple yet powerful design, which doesn’t make the wearer stick out of the crowd like a forgotten nail is the Irish sweater pattern. These pieces are most often made of white or eggshell white cotton and are knitted so that the middle of the chest part shows a vertical rectangle of alternating stitches. It’s very classic and can be worn in combination with any mens clothing casual wear, such as jeans.

Without going overboard on the pattern, the Icelandic way is perfectly fine for a cozy piece. Icelandic sweaters are most often made of white, brown and a combination of the two colors. These shape of the pattern is usually circular drawing lines and zig-zags around the chest horizontally. It’s what you can wear if you have an iPod and know how to use it, or if you are older. Classic cardigans like these make a heart warming gift.

Norwegian sweaters are a bit colder to look at, but unless they’re thinner in the material too, they’re really comfy to wear. Eggshell or white alternating with navy blue is the basic color combination. It’s up to taste, I’d probably opt for the Irish white version if I had to choose a nice looking round neck sweater.

There are some demographic clothing preferences to keep in mind. If the person you’re giving it to is over 30 or 40, you can be very successful with a nice sweater piece. Any younger than that, they may prefer hoodies for a more casual look. (This may also just be advertisers and their ideas, more than what people themselves prefer.  Not that long ago, probably the last winter an advertisement caught my eye, it shown a sweater and subtitled it with ‘rubbish’. If anything, a warm piece of gentlemens clothing during the winter is an useful thing. Not something to be snubbed.)

If you are giving a sweater or two to a loved one, or buying it for yourself, you probably already have a good idea about color preference and general sweater requirements (button up, pullover, zippered). This will make your mens sweater shopping as easy as pie!

A milkshake maker needs to be universal. It’s the first axiom people often forget about; but not you, now that the idea is planted in your mind. A good appliance can be used to make smoothies, milkshakes, maybe even latte whipped for the coffee supreme, and probably a dozen other things that don’t pop to mind right away. The more different applications it can deal with, the better. Don’t forget that this could also raises the price a little, so set aside a bit more. It’s worth it.

Durability and build quality also fall through the filter awfully often when it comes to kitchen equipment. Make sure it doesn’t happen to you. Without breaking a sweat, you can find a milkshake machine that comes with a ten years limited warranty. If that’s not enough to find out all the errors, perks and faults of a device, I don’t know what is.

The size of the mixing bowl or glass doesn’t matter as long as you’re making just a glass or two at a time. Once you’re into industrial scale milkshake manufacturing, you’ll find that a liter (a quarter of a gallon) is needed for smooth and frustration-free performance of the task. Have the neighbors kids over, and treat them to a glass of smoothie. It doesn’t get any easier to do a favor for the neighbors.

The price ranges from dollars to hundreds of dollars. Literally, you can hop online and order a frother for the cost of a nice meal, plus shipping costs, and have it by the end of the week, or go for a professional grade, heavy duty appliance that can make dozens of glasses of milkshake without a hitch. It’s all down to what your needs are, and if you’re aware of those needs on a conscious level.

Set a budget to put the money factor out of your mind and deal with more important factors first. Choosing a milkshaker doesn’t have to be a complicated kitchen task. Some people are afraid of it for no apparent reason; don’t let it daunt you as well. Milkshake makers are the best.

Chances are that with most breakdowns, you can just call someone or an auto club and that will solve the immediate problem. But situations do arise when you have to drive in a storm, or off on some back roads, or somewhere far from anywhere you know. In the event of a breakdown there, you’ll need to stay warm and alert and wait for help in your auto.

Here are some things to put in a winter emergency kit to keep in your car most all winter long and are mandatory to take on any winter trip.

- Matches and a lighter: A whole box of waterproof, preferably windproof matches, from a camping store or online. Get a windproof, electronic lighter. A two dollar disposable butane lighter may prove next to worthless in a storm.

- Candles, napkins, and hand sanitizer: Pack a half dozen or more small votive or tea candles. The kind you can set down. You’d be amazed how much heat a single candle can produce. You’ll want some paper towels, paper napkins or toilet paper. These have their obvious uses and you’ll want them for first aid and to start a fire. Pack an ounce or two of alcohol based hand sanitizer in the first aid kit. A little hand sanitizer on paper will instantly ignite.

- Hats and gloves: Sometimes we dash off in the automobile without all our winter clothing. Keeping warm is often about simple insulation. Keep a couple extra ski hats and heavy gloves in the kit. If your hands lose feeling, you’re in huge trouble. Keeping your head warm is critical. More body heat is lost there than anywhere else, and we typically insulate it the least.

- Sleeping bag (one or more): This is particularly important if you could be stranded with small children who need protecting. A good quality synthetic fiber sleeping bag is a must if you’re traveling below freezing. Cheap bags don’t roll up well for storage in the trunk with your car gear and don’t insulate well. Goose down is a wonderful insulator, but down bags cost a lot and you may be tempted to leave it at home. Most importantly, you can’t keep them rolled up or stuffed for long without damaging them. They’re worthless when wet.

- Space blankets, tarps, and some trash bags: Put two mylar space blankets and/or mylar tarps and a couple of heavy duty 40 gal. trash bags in the emergency kit. The trash bags can be cut for arms and head for a waterproof, windproof poncho which is a vapor barrier and will retain body heat. Mylar serves as a reflective heat barrier. Wrap up in one inside the sleeping bag and cover the bag with the other. They do work. Test them out.

- First aid kit, flashlights, and a knife: Always pack a first aid kit, all year, for obvious reasons. Put two flashlights and extra batteries in the kit. LED flashlights don’t burn out bulbs. Older types do. Disposables are ok but don’t get the cheapest thing you can find. Buy several that are all alike. Use a couple around the house to insure reliability. Check the lights in the kit each month or so and replace them in the spring. A sturdy handled knife or a utility knife with blades is a must. Get serrated blades, available online and at any home improvement store. If you have to slice apart a seat belt or car seats for fuel it will make a difference.

- Food and water: Non perishable, high calorie food like large chocolate bars or protein, granola, or candy bars are good energy. Seal them air tight and check occasionally to see that they’re untouched. They can attract little animals, as well as kids. Bring water in unopened, original disposable plastic bottles. If it’s unopened it can last quite a while. Change it out periodically. If it’s opened, you can’t assure against contamination. Glass bottles can break. Protect the water from freezing solid of you are stuck in the vehicle.

- Car tools, tape, and flares: Know where your car jack, it’s crank, tire iron and lug nut key are and how to use them. A very heavy duty 10 to 12 inch flat blade screwdriver, a reflective warning triangle and always useful duct tape are all 12 month mandatory equipment. Emergency road flares from any auto parts store could be useful. However, they’re unreliable if they ever get damp. They pose at least, a minor fire hazard. You’re not going to use them unless it’s to alert help that’s on the way. Whether to carry them is debatable, but it’s up to you.

- Phone and CB radio: Your ability to call for help is the number one safety tool you have. Few of us travel anywhere without a cell phone, but be prepared by getting an extra battery for it and a 12 volt car charger. Keep the spare charged up and in the vehicle. Consider a portable CB radio. A CB radio is unlike a cell phone, which relies on towers which may not be near or blocked by hills or canyons. CB communication is radio to radio. It can be relayed by anyone who intercepts a call for help. They have built-in, dedicated emergency channels which are monitored by first responders. Portable CBs run on AA batteries or 12 volt power in your car or 120 volts in camp. A good quality, simple to operate unit costs less than $100 retail and weighs less than a pound.

You can put your emergency car kit together in less than one afternoon and for very little money. You may already have some of these items. It will give you peace of mind to know it’s there and ready and you’ll be thankful that you’ve got one if you ever have to use it.
