Baby Blankets – What to Look For

Baby blankets are among the most fun things to shop for.  There’s nothing sweeter than a baby, and by extension, baby blankets are right up there with the top wonderful and happy things in the world.

What to look for in a baby blanket?

A baby’s skin is sensitive to touch, they are continuously growing. Therefore, any infant blanket that is purchased must take the baby’s tender skin, as well as safety, into consideration.

When looking for the best blanket for baby it is important to hold the blanket, feel for the texture, making sure that the blanket is not rough or harsh. One will look for soft to touch, comfortable, and snugly. Though the blanket should be soft and comforting, make sure that it is not too silky, making the blanket a suffocating hazard to the baby. Babies as they grow begin to wiggle and grab on to things so if the blanket is too silky, the baby can easily pull the blanket over there head, stuff it into their mouths, and suffocate. Something no one wants.

What is on the blanket is also something to pay close attention to. Though designs are beautiful, not all are safe. Do not seek blankets that has removable (Velcro) attachment, these can become choking hazard; nor should there be any thing that dangles, has buttons or small parts on it that can easily become a choking hazard for the baby.

Make sure the material of the blanket does not shed, which is another possible choking hazard. Because babies are learning they are unable to spit things out, therefore if the blanket sheds its fiber it can enter into the baby mouth or nose be a danger to the baby. The threading on the blanket should be intact, not easily tugged. As babies grow they begin to pull, tug and nibble on cloths, so this is the reason one would want to make sure that choking and suffocation is avoided.

Cotton baby blankets are a good material, or even polyester. The blanket is used often for covering the baby, so make sure that the blanket is not too large or too thick, it should be an appropriate size and thickness for the baby. If a blanket is over-sized and too thick it is possible that the blanket can generate more heat to the baby’s body making it very uncomfortable, and uneasy for the baby to breathe. Remember that the baby is still learning to breathe and need to have enough air circulation. The blanket, basically, should be breathable.

Another important factor in the best baby blanket search is color (particularly if this is a crib bedding blanket). Color is important because base on the color, determines the how cool the baby would remain. Dark colors generate more heat, so again we want t make sure the baby is comfortable. Light colors, such as white, light blue, pinks etc. are very nice cool relaxing colors.

Baby blankets should also be easy to carry. One would want a blanket that can easily be transported, again size and thickness makes this possible. Now it not all about the baby, but the parent. As a parent or guardian, you want to be able to maintain the qualities of the blanket, making sure it is easy to wash and carry around.

Baby blankets are an essential part to baby comfort.  Study the product listing carefully with examination of the features to determine which blanket is best for your baby. It is not rocket science, but it seeking the best fitting blanket for baby should be well thought out. It may seem simple to walk into a store and purchase a blanket, but when you think about baby and his/her safety, and comfort, then you would want to pay attention to detail. Again the material should be soft and gentle, not scratchy, harsh and rough. It should not contain anything that may become hazardous to the baby’s well-being. With these things in mind you are sure to find many exciting options in baby blankets.
